When compared to popular RTS and FPS games of the end 20 years, BioWare maintains that The Old Commonwealth brought something new to its genre.

One month agone in a galaxy right Here, BioWare's anticipated online RPG Star Wars: The Antique Republic launched to good reviews and excellent gross revenue. While few people take issue with the game's high production values Beaver State immersive storytelling, one frequent criticism is that TOR is, in terms of gameplay, non substantially different from the rest of the MMO market. Now that the dust from the game's first few weeks has settled, BioWare has taken an chance to matter to in on the gamy's reception. While the company admits that its game bequeath not redefine MMO gameplay, it maintains that TOR is leastwise arsenic innovative as almost games in the RTS or FPS markets – if non more so.

"[If] you deal a Battlefield or a Call of Tariff or a Gears of Warfare Beaver State even a Half-Life – those games use the same tried and actual interface and the same tried and honorable game mechanism of the first-individual shooter genre that's been around for 20 geezerhood," says James Ohlen, the bet on's director. "[RTS] games kept the same tried and admittedly interface and the same tried and true mechanism that existed for 20 years." According to Ohlen, TOR is evolutionary rather than turning, focusing on how to reach the genre incrementally better rather than drastically different. "[We] wanted to take the lessons that have been industrial in that genre over old age and years and years and basically refine them, much like other companies bash with another genres."

In particular, Ohlen defended the game's deep narrative developments. "We were building in essence a classic MMO with BioWare storytelling jell in the Star Wars universe," he explains. "And there were a lot of multitude out in that respect who wanted us to reinvent the universe and seed upwards with a plot system that had ne'er been done ahead. And that was something we weren't doing." According to Ohlen, BioWare did not want to drive existing MMO fans away, so purposely kept much of the gameplay that would be familiar to them.

With complete 1 million users in the first week, TOR is unity of the fastest-growing MMOs in account. Now, BioWare's challenge will equal to keep open the impulse releas. Regarding many of the very vocal negativity in regard to the game, Ohlen remarks, "We'Ra a swelled target … But that's honorable the nature of the game. If you'rhenium going to build a huge game and test to go out to much of populate, you're leaving to have people who just react poorly." No arguments here.
